What is YOUR sleeping style? How to pick the perfect position for your health – and what it says about your personality

  • Getting a good sleep is fundamental for your body to function at its very best
  • Sleeping positions can affect our bones, muscles, spine and breathing patterns
  • The three main positions we fall asleep in are on our backs, our side or stomach
  • Back sleeping is best, followed by side sleeping and stomach sleeping is worst

A sleep expert has revealed the benefits of each sleeping position and the impact each has on your health.

According to Wowbeds founder Gary Ginsberg, side sleeping reduces pain and sleep disturbing behaviour while back sleeping supports the spine and reduces wrinkles.

Those who sleep on their stomach, however, are more likely to experience back and neck misalignment, in addition to face wrinkles.

Back sleepers

Back sleeping is the ideal position for spinal support, it can also reduce chronic pain, allergies and fine lines and wrinkles from forming on your face.

While this sleeping position may be physically supportive for many, it is important to stay symmetrical and changing arm positions as it may affect spine alignment.

Although if you are pregnant, suffer from acid reflux, snoring or sleep apnea back sleeping should be avoided.

What does your sleeping style say about your personality?

Side sleepers

This position could indicate that you just roll with whatever life throws at you. Surveys have found that side sleepers consider themselves healthy and sociable.

Stomach sleepers

Sleeping on your stomach can indicate a protective and secretive state, this position is thought to be someone closing themselves off.  It can also show protection by nestling into their pillow with the face hidden.

Back sleepers

This sleeping position can be a sign of a confident person with a carefree and casual attitude.

Fetal sleepers

The fetal sleeping position is position because it helps people feel both safe and comfortable. You may find yourself ‘drawn to’ sleeping this way when feeling vulnerable and in need of self-comfort.

Various position sleepers

If you fall asleep one way and wake up in a completely different position, it could mean you’re up for anything and always exploring new ideas in your mind. but you may be guilty of not finishing things you start.

Side sleepers

Sleeping on your side is a position with great benefits; it can reduce pain sleep disturbing behaviour, is ideal for pregnant women and those with acid reflux.

The three most common side positions are ‘left versus right’, the ‘curled-up fetal position’ and ‘yearner’, where your arms are extended in front of you.

This is a popular position for many, but those suffering from shoulder pain, lock jaw or are worried about wrinkles, this isn’t the position for you.

Stomach sleepers

Stomach sleeping unfortunately comes with more negatives than positives as it can throw your body out of alignment.

The body’s spine is forced to stretch into an unnatural position while the hips and stomach sink into the mattress. This position is also prone to wrinkles due to heavy pressure on the face.

However, if you do struggle to let go of sleeping on your stomach, choose a thinner pillow and a firmer mattress.

Maintaining a good sleep pattern takes practice but is possible, to aid in switching positions consider the perfect pillow and the sleep space you need.

Although quality bedding is crucial for a good nights sleep, finding the right mattress, pillow and support, depending on your sleep position will make a difference.
